Best Parts of Nelson Ledges Quarry Park
Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is where people from all walks of life come and enjoy the breathtaking view hidden in the trees of Garrettsville, Ohio. This spiritual spot is not the only reason people make it a tradition to return to Nelson Ledges; the community and loving energy are undeniable factors calling people back.
The Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is surrounded by the fascinating nature creating this beautiful hideaway. At the center is a natural spring-fed quarry that provides joy to visitors with cliff jumping, kayaking/paddle boarding, or just jumping in for a nice swim. Plus, the park does an amazing job keeping everyone safe with lifeguards at; not only the swimming area but the specific cliff jumping spot, as well as a rope marking where the kayaks and paddle boarders can go. Although, if you would like some quiet, you're more than welcome to wander and find a secluded spot to relax. These are my personal picks for best parts of Nelson Ledges.
Community:
I was fortunate enough to grow up near Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, exposing myself to these open and loving people. No matter who, what, or where you come from, the people of Nelsons will be waiting with open arms and a smile. When I got a second to sit down with the visitors and the employees, coming up with negatives was a difficult and a short list to make.
One of the lifeguards who goes by Toad, working the cliff jumping spot, shared that even though this is his first summer working at Nelson's, he is already planning on returning the following summer. Toad was also nice enough to share some naturally grown blueberries found around the park! I also had the opportunity to chit-chat with one of the check-in workers, Cheyanne. She shared how other than some of the guests not respecting the beautiful land by leaving trash and such, the community they have built from those who live there in the summer to those who just come for a short stay. Everyone is bringing uplifting and positive energy.
Fun in the Sun:
When it comes to what to do at Nelsons Ledges, it's all up to your limits. If you want to float or swim, you are welcome to hang out on the beach, with a kid area! Bring your paddleboard or kayak and take some laps around the quarry; see the gorgeous plant life. And for those who dare, there is cliff jumping of about 50 feet, do not worry though there is a lifeguard on duty in that area too.
While walking around there around multiple little shops to explore as well as multiple food selections that are delicious and made right in front of you, my personal favorite is Athenas' $4 grilled cheese, with your choice of cheese. Bring your camping gear and pitch a tent for a night or two. Or join one of the infamous festivals like Bad Fish or Gore, (stay tuned for more in-depth on camping and festivals in a separate article.)
For decades visitors of the Nelsons have spoken of the strong spiritual energy the legends radiate, and it's heartwarming to see how those vibrations spread to the people.
History:
The history of the Ledges is long and free just like the energy left there. This land was originally owned by the Native American tribe, Cherokee. Using this land for routes of trades depicted from the consistent footpath left.
Although, the quarry was not created till a major mining area for quartz and sand in the 1940s to '50s had a huge accident. One day in the late 50s, one of the pieces of machinery hit a spring and water started filling the 30-acre quarry. Leaving these spectacular islands and rock shelves that if you are lucky will get the chance to explore.
Soon after the mining company abounded the area, hippies and bikers found this glorious space and used it as a "private" paradise sadly until the officials discovered and shut them down. Finally, the area was purchased by multiple different owners throughout the years and has been an amazing place to create memories.
Nelsons Ledges Quarry Park is a magical place filled with love and positivity. The people bring love and an open-minded community that embraces anyone who enters's their gates. Anyone who has a chance to enter the ledges will feel the amazing vibrations that flower through these trees and waters. For lack of better words, Nelsons is a hippie paradise.
